LOCATION

This year's Convergence will be held at Morehead State University in eastern Kentucky. Thanks to Sue Tallichet, Morehead professor and Kentuckians for the Commonwealth member, for making this location possible!

To learn more about eastern Kentucky and why we chose this location, check out Voices from Appalachia, a human rights report written by ENGAGE members in collaboration with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (KFTC) and residents of Floyd County who are directly impacted by mountaintop removal coal mining. In gathering in Kentucky this year, we will be highlighting the ongoing devastation caused by mountaintop removal, the urgent need to move away from coal to clean energy, and efforts to create economic alternatives in a region so dependent on coal.

This convergence is an opportunity to support the ESCR US working group (Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights in the US) within ENGAGE and explore specific themes: our roles as both "outsiders" and allies to communities we work with, and how this tension is currently playing out in Appalachia; how a human rights framework can contribute to broad-based coalition building; and how we can support grassroots exchanges between communities affected by mining, in the US and internationally.

REGISTRATION COST

The Convergence funds itself from what participants contribute, on a sliding scale.

This year, the sliding scale is between $50 and $100.

Your registration fee goes towards: Food for Friday night, all day Saturday, and Sunday morning and afternoon; two nights of dorm housing; printed materials and other supplies for facilitators; gas expenses for local coordinators during the Convergence, and honorariums for guest speakers/workshop facilitators and community hosts. Please bring extra money if you intend to purchase anything outside of basic meals.

You may pay through paypal on this registration page, but paying by check is also an option. Please contact mariela.rich@gmail.com if you prefer to send a check.

Is cost an issue for you this year?  Don't let that stop you from coming to the Convergence! Please contact us to discuss options for reduced registration at info@engagetheworld.org
